Advertising for the 2002 State of Kansas Governor- Sebelius




The advertising I found for Kathleen was from her 2002 campaign running for governor of Kansas. The first advertisement that I found was a TV advertisement.

            This ad is definitely an image ad but does list a number of issues and her stances. The only thing is while listing the issues she doesn’t really say how she will do these things. The issues in this particular ad are heath care, cracking down on insurance companies for denying care, help seniors save on prescription drugs, and that she doesn’t take any campaign money from insurance companies. I know though it is a 30 second ad. That is probably why while listing these issues the ad is really just enhancing her image to the public. These particular issues make her seem caring, nurturing and independently strong. She cares for the elderly and doesn’t and is independently strong in the fact that she doesn’t take money from insurance companies to help her in the campaign.

The second advertisement that I watched was also a TV advertisement from the same campaign in 2002.

            This ad is a defense ad from an attack ad that her opponent had put out. Instead of her attacking him she simply was saying that instead of attacking one another we should be attacking the problems in Kansas. This is another image advertisement because I believe they were trying to show that she doesn’t stoop down to the level of her opponent.

Finally with another TV advertisement I found from 2002 is an image advertisement all together. It hits on her high points and what she has done. She plays on the role of a care-taker and nurturing. There is education as the issue but all together this ad list things about her that she’s done, for example the ad says that she’s cut governor waste to get dollars into the classroom, lifted teacher pay from 40th in the nation, and promoted local control. With all this being said within the ad, the video itself plays also a huge role on her image. There are kids learning and her sitting beside a young boy helping him with his schoolwork.



In conclusion, it is really apparent to me that most all of the advertisements I watched played heavily on the image side for Kathleen Sebelius. I think the issues were listed in all of them but not in very much detail. They all showed credibility however by re-telling what she has been successful with in the past.

  1. I do not think many people immediately think "nurturing" when they think of her, what else can she do through ads to help change peoples images of her to think of her in such way?

  2. When it comes to her ads being more image based do you think this could hurt her, since she is not focusing on her issues as much?

  3. I am curious, do you think that her ads would of been more beneficial if she would of focused on one issue, and talked about how she would fix it?
